My favorite Autumn children’s books
Wednesday, October 22
Every Autumn I take out a huge stack of children's Fall books that I absolutely love. I've collected and curated this list over the years, and here are some of my absolute favorites! I'm fairly picky with the books I choose...they must have beautiful illustrations and a rich story. Extra points if they take place in another time period haha (just kidding, but I do love sharing different time periods with my children!) I've underlined and linked them all in the booklist below! Enjoy!

Ideas for Family Traditions
Monday, October 13
I wanted to give you a list of family tradition ideas that our family has adopted! These will hopefully get you thinking about ways you can incorporate even simple things, like family dinners together:)
1. Dinner together (This may not seem like a "tradition" but did you know this is one of the biggest indicators of childhood success in life? To me, it might be the most important tradition to keep alive!)
2. Asking "high's and low's" at the dinner table- each night we have the kids share their highlights from the day. During the Autumn season, we ask what they are thankful for!
3. Sunday afternoon Swedish pancakes- After church we all have a nice lunch together of Swedish pancake. Substitute your favorite meal, and enjoy sabbath together. One fun addition is reading James Herriot's Treasury for Children See HERE. The "All Creatures Great & Small" Veterinarian in Yorkshire, England has so many wild adventures with animals that my kid's love!
4. Friday night pizza and movie night- This is a staple in our home and the kids look forward to it every week! I buy the pizza dough and sauce at Trader Joes, but you can also homemake it!
5. Seasonal Books- For years I have been collecting books for each season. I store them away, and when the first day of the new season arrives, I pull them out. Each September, I pull out all my Fall books. The day after Thanksgiving, my Autumn books will go in storage, and out will come my huge basket of Christmas books! I use Thriftbooks, or look for deals on Amazon, or hit up yard sales or thrift stores!
6. Library Day- Every Monday I take the kids to the library. We bring back our old books and find new ones. The kids grab books and have a relaxing afternoon reading, they truly look forward to it!
7. Valentines & St. Patrick's Day breakfast - For both these holidays, I decorate the dining room table with appropriate decor so that the kids get a fun surprise when they wake up! We make pink heart pancakes for V-day, and green pancakes for SPD. I usually find some Target $ bin or dollar tree items the night before to make it fun!
8. Good Friday Meal for Easter- On Good Friday, I make a charcuterie board of items that all represent the walk to the cross for Jesus. (ie: Olives for the Mt. of Olives, a toothpick for the spear, a Hershey's kiss for the kiss when Judas betrays Jesus, etc.) We read through the scriptures associated with each food item, and then end the evening washing each other's feet, it is so special. I have it saved as a reel on my IG HERE if you're interested
9. First day of summer- When the kids are officially out of school, I gift them each some pool toys to use for the summer. Everyone gets an inner tube and pool noodle and a few rings or sinkable toys. (Thank you Dollar Tree!) Then I give each of the kids a special Bible verse I want them to memorize for the summer. You can see more about our summer tradition HERE.
10. Summer Read Alouds- During the summer I print out a list of read-a-louds we want to read. We usually set a goal of how many books we want to read together, and the kids have fun crossing them off! I love Read Aloud Revival for book lists!
11. Midsummer- My dad's entire family is from Sweden, and after my children were born, I realized I wanted to incorporate more of his heritage in to our yearly calendar. In late June we celebrate the summer solstice (longest day of the year) by wearing flower crowns, eating Swedish food, and then dancing around the mid-summer pole! You can see more about it HERE.
12. Annual Summer Trip- Every summer our family goes to the beach in Santa Cruz. It's not fancy, but it is full of family and full of love, and it's the kids absolute favorite! Even if it's simple like camping, pick a week each year and make it a priority.
13. Back to school camping trip- At the end of the summer, Kevin takes the kids camping the weekend before they start school. It is a way our kid's mark that the summer is over and the Fall is about to begin!
14. Autumn Party- Every year the kids and I have put our head's together to plan an Autumn party. Most years we do apple bobbing, pumpkin painting, and bake loads of apple and pumpkin treats. One year Avonlea and I planned an Anne of Green Gables Mother/daughter watch party. Be creative!
15. Thanksgiving Run- One tradition we've had for decades is doing a "Turkey trot" event on thanksgiving morning to help raise money for our local homeless shelter. It's a beautiful way to start the day, exercising in the park with our family, and raising money for a good cause! Check your local guide to see if there are any events that would work with your family!
16. Cutting down our Christmas Tree- We live a short drive away from a National Forrest that allows certain areas to be cut down for Christmas trees. The weekend after Thanksgiving we load up our thermos of hot chocolate and a packed lunch, and head up the mountain. We play Christmas carols in the car, and I bring a new Christmas book that I reveal to them on the drive up. It is one of our favorite days of the year.
17. Santa Lucia Day- Every December 13th, our family celebrates our Swedish heritage by observing St. Lucia day. The night before we make the traditional pepparkakor and Lussekator buns, and then on the morning of the 13th, the oldest daughter wears a crown of lights on her head and delivers the treats to my husband. The boys follow my daughter as "star boys". We then take all our baked goods around town to all the widows we know. You can see more about it HERE.
18. Christmas Baking- I used to do this with my Grandmother, and now my mom does it with my children and I! We pick a day and all gather at my parent's house and spend the entire morning making Christmas cookies. We basically stock up for all the festivities over multiple days! The kids love using the cookie cutters and decorating with sprinkles, red hots, pearl candy and frosting! An easy tradition to implement!
19. Christmas Family Movie Night- One night in December I invite my parents and all my siblings and their families to come watch The Polar Express at our home. We drink apple cider, play games, and then sit by the fire and watch the movie with the twinkle lights on the tree and mantle. It's such a fun time!
20. Æbleskiver on Christmas morning- Christmas dinner may change from year to year, but we ALWAYS have Æbleskivers (a danish puffy ball shaped pancake) on Christmas morning. We fill them with whip cream, lingonberries, maple syrup or eat them plain!
The WONDERFUL thing about traditions, is that you can start at ANY time! Some of these traditions I grew up with, and others I have incorporated as an adult with my own children. Some of them I've done since my kids were born, and others I have started this year.
Now...tell me YOUR traditions!

My Top 5 Tips for Budget Travel to Europe
Tuesday, June 24
Soooo....with a shoestring budget and a "can-do" spirit, we dove in to the research on how we could get 6 people to Europe for less money!
And let me tell you...WE FOUND A WAY!! (where there's a will there's a way, right?! ha)
For the same price as renting an Airbnb on the California coast (just hours away from our hometown), we somehow got ALL OUR FAMILY TO FRANCE and spent a glorious two weeks enjoying the beautiful countryside and coast:)
If you're still following, here's my top 5 tips for making it happen:
1) MILES CREDIT CARDS:
If flying abroad is a priority for you, don't waste any time in applying for miles credit cards. Most miles credit cards will give you 50-100K points if you spend a certain amount of money in the first 3 months. It's usually a very attainable amount. In the last 15 years, Kevin and I have got the majority of our flights for free because we keep opening miles credit cards and cashing in on the bonus points they give when you sign up! My only caveat to this one is that every card we open and put money on, WE PAY! Do not open a card if you can't pay it. But if you are able, you will never go back to paying for flights!!
Our favorite cards are from Chase. We've had the Chase Sapphire (which is the best, with lots of points and a low yearly fee!), the Chase Ink (for our business cards), and the Chase Reserve (you get lots of points and a big travel credit, but a little more in the yearly fee). If you use this link HERE for the Chase Sapphire or Reserve card, we both get an extra points! Let me know if use it so I can make sure we both get the points!
But we've also used...
United
Capital One Venture
Southwest
To read more about using miles credit cards, see my post HERE
In 2023 we took 3 international trips and used the bulk of all our points for these 3 trips. So...when we flew to France in 2024, we had enough points to get 4 free tickets, and then still had to purchase 2 tickets. But this still saved us thousands of dollars!
2) HOME EXCHANGE:
Holy Moly, this one has been an ABSOLUTE game changer for our family!! This website allowed us to stay FOR FREE for 2 weeks at the most amazing locations in France. We stayed in 2 gorgeous French farmhouses in Provence, and then a stunning apartment in Nice! ALL FOR FREE!
Here's how it works...you sign up on Home Exchange and list your home/apartment/whatever! You do not even have to own your home. You can use Home Exchange while renting! People can contact you to stay in your home. They can either stay when you are gone on your own vacation, and you will earn Guest Points. OR you two can do an exchange. There is absolutely no money involved in the exchange, which makes it so nice!
You can read more about our experience HERE and HERE, and use my link to sign up!! It's SO easy and so amazing. We've met the most lovely people all around the world through it:)
3) EATING IN
I might sound cliche to suggest eating in for meals, but do you know how much money we saved doing this? A lot. Now don't get me wrong, food is such an important cultural aspect of travel, and I spent years traveling as a single and married person where we tried everything and ate out for all the meals. But if you have a passel of children and are trying to keep to a budget, this is the way to go!
Let's break it down. Most dinner entrees you buy are going to be at least $10-20. Let's say we use the cheaper end of that number and multiply $10 times 6 people in our family. At the cheapest, our dinner will be $60. Then multiply $60 times 14 days and that amount comes to $840. If your entree is more than $10 (which is more than likely), just dinners will cost you over $1000, not to mention breakfast, lunch, snacks, and of course....gelato! haha!
So instead, we went to the local grocery store and picked up bulk items we could eat each day.
For breakfast we ate eggs, toast, yogurt and fruit.
For lunch we literally ate baguette sandwiches every day. A baguette cost us like $1 and fed our whole family. We added cheese or meat which we could stretch out a few days before buying more. We also ate apples, carrots and some sort of chips or crackers.
For dinner we made very basic options. Here's a lineup of some of the things we made:
- Pasta with sauce and roasted veggies. The entire meal was around $7 for our whole family to eat. We rotated pasta types, and sauce types (red sauce, pesto, etc).
- Pizza- We found frozen pizzas for a few bucks each. These are not the same as your junky American frozen pizzas. Many of these frozen pizzas were made with healthy, local ingredients. Our kids loved it!
- Salads with chicken. Veggies are very cheap in Europe, and then we'd get a chicken to add for protein.
- We'd often try the local foods they had at the grocery store! In France, Kev and the kids loved the Croquettes.
For snacks, I actually packed a TON of snacks from Costco in our suitcases. I got bulk items of dried fruit, nuts, granola bars, etc. I brought them so we didn't have to purchase any thing extra! However, we did let the kids get a gelato every day from a store, so that was our one special treat:)
So, all that to say, if you can eat super simple from a grocery store, DO IT! Kevin estimated we probably saved $500-$1000 on food alone by not eating out for every meal!
4) USING TURO FOR CAR RENTALS
The biggest expense on our trips usually ends up being a car rental. With 6 people, we always have to go with the biggest car option (we literally thought about this before having a 4th kid, but we figured that wasn't a good reason not to have another child haha!) Because of that, we've started using Turo, which is essentially like Airbnb but for cars. People will list their cars to use, and you can book their car for your holiday. We've used Turo many times, and for the most part it's been a great option. We've saved a lot of money going this route. However, we did have one tricky experience where the car we rented didn't have working air conditioning. They actually did list that in the description, but we somehow missed it, and it was so hot we asked for another car. The guy was great and actually found another car to swap it out with, so it all worked out in the end. Sometimes cars on Turo are not cheaper than a rental car, but sometimes they are a LOT cheaper. So it's always worth a look before you book a rental car. The other really nice thing about Turo is that they will often deliver it straight to you. One time we stayed 4 days in London, and then headed to the countryside. The Turo car owner drove the car to where we were staying in London so that we didn't have to go back to the airport to get the car! So convenient. To check out Turo click HERE
5) Choose FREE Activities
This one also may sound like a no-brainer, but it can actually really help inform what country may be the best budget option! Going to the South of France was a wonderful option for us because there were so many "free" things to do that required no entrance fees or money. We stayed 10 days in Provence, and it cost almost nothing (except a few parking lot fees) to wander and explore the little hilltop towns. We then spent time in the French Riviera, and all the beaches we went to were totally free. We would find a little spot on the beach, swim and play in the sand all day, and then head home in the evening to cook dinner. We also found some kid friendly amusement parks that had free entry, and then you could buy tickets for the rides, and they were very cheap!
At the end of the day, ANY vacation you take will cost you money. However, if you're savvy about it, you CAN take your family to Europe and save thousands of dollars!!
Lastly, I want to just break down how much we saved using these tips:
2 Weeks in France without using TIPS = $12k
Airfare from California to Marseille- $800/person x 6 People = $4,800
2 Weeks Accommodations in France- $250/night x 14 Nights = $3,500
Eating Out for Meals- $25 x 14 days x 6 people = $2100
Rental Car- $1,250 (7 passenger van for 14 days)
Gas- $250
2 Weeks in France Using TIPS = $3380
Airfare from California to Marseille- 4 free tickets/2 paid tickets 1,480
Lodging- $0
Eating In for Meals- $600
Rental car Turo - $1,050 (7 passenger van for 14 days)
Gas- $250
I hope this was helpful for you!
YOU TOO can take your family to Europe if you get creative in the way you go about it!!
Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to share resources with you!!
3 Way's we're weaving scripture and Discipleship in to our summer routine
Sunday, June 15
I am so passionate about exposing my kids to the good and beautiful things of this world...classic art, beautiful stories and literature, gripping history, maps and geography, fun and playful poetry, powerful music, etc etc etc! I get excited showing my kids a Van Gogh painting, or putting on Bethoven's 5th symphony for them to enjoy.
But nothing is more beautiful to me than Jesus. So as I was praying in to the rhythms I wanted our family to have this summer, I knew I wanted to have some weekly habits around scripture memory and intentional times of discipleship.
Here are 3 ways we're trying to do this....(keyword "trying"! We are NOT parenting experts, these are only just ideas that we've found useful so far this summer!!)
1) Picking a LIFE VERSE for each of our children
Kevin and I actually spent a weekend praying through the verses we wanted our kids to know by heart as their life verse. Each verse stemmed from something we saw in their life that needed encouragement. One of our sons has been particularly fearful lately, so we chose 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did NOT give you a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and self discipline".
The other verses we picked for our kids this summer were:
Proverbs 3:5-6- Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.
Joshua 1:9 - Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go
Matthew 22:37- Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind"
After picking the specific verse for each child, I wrote them out on a notecard. I then planned a special s'more night where we roasted marshmallows around the fire pit in our back yard. We made a little celebration out of handing them each their cards, and challenged them to memorize their verse and hide it in their heart so that they would have it when they needed it most!
They all memorized it immediately, which was amazing. Hearing them say their verses each morning has been the highlight of my summer so far! We actually all decided to pick a verse a week now with how fast they learned them.
If you're a product of Christian culture from the '80's and '90's, then you probably grew up singing from Psalty the Psalmbook cassette tapes haha! At least I did. My mom has been buying Psalty CD's for my kids now, and they LOVE THEM. On one of the CD's, there is a song that goes through the entire alphabet with a verse for each letter. My kids loved singing it, so I decided to write each verse on a posterboard and put it up in our dining room. We practice daily at mealtimes. It's been a fun and catchy way for them to hide more scripture memory in their heart:) JUST FYI: I took out some of the "thou's" and "thee's" and replaced them with a contemporary word!
Here are the verses below:
“A!” “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23“B!” “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31
“C!” Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Eph 6:1

“J!” “Jesus wept.” John 11:35
“K!” Keep thy tongue from evil.” Psalm 34:13
“L!” “Look unto me and be ye saved.” Isaiah 45:22
“M!” “Marvel not, ye must be born again.” John 3:7
“N!” No man can serve two masters.” Matt. 6:24
“O!” Oh, give thanks unto to the Lord, for He is good.” Psalm 118:1
