Top 5 Things to see in Port-au-Prince Haiti and a Give-Away!!

Thursday, August 20

You may remember that in May I visited my best friend and her husband Ted in Haiti! I've shared quite  a few posts about our amazing time there (Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, etc.), and today I thought I would share 5 fun things we did in Port-au-Prince, Haiti!

1)  Observatoire Boutilliers:
High above the city is a very cool look out point where you can see the whole city, along with the ocean and coast line! My friend Katharine took me up there and pointed out different parts of the city. It was super helpful to get my bearings and understand the lay of the land! It was cooler as we climbed elevation, and we were thankful for a quick respite from the heat!

2) The Hotel Oloffson:
This PaP legend was built in the late 1800's as a grand mansion for a president and his family. The hotel is built in the classic "Gingerbread" style, popular in Haiti at the time. In 1935 it was bought by a Swedish captain who turned it into a hotel. Over the years it has housed many famous people including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Mick Jagger.  I gotta admit, as cool as this hotel was, it has a lot of voodoo statues outside of it, has become a bit run-down, and felt a tad on the creepier side to me. But, certainly a PaP landmark worth checking out!

3) Quartier Latin (Petionville):

This restaurant was amazing and quite the dining experience! Housed in an old colonial mansion in the historic area of Petionville, this restaurant was quite a treat for us. It was decorated beautifully and reminded me of New Orleans. Petionville rests in the hills of PaP, and is known for being a little cooler than the rest of the city. There is some neat architecture found in this part of PaP!

4) Champs de Mars:
While PaP has no real "downtown" area where you can walk around, it does have a few green parks with some interesting monuments. My favorite monument/statue is called Le Negre Marron, which roughly translates into English as the "unknown slave". Essentially the slave is holding a conch shell, that he supposedly blew to rally other slaves to assemble and overtake the colonial powers. It really was an impressive reminder of Haiti's history (to read the brief history I wrote, read here).  Driving through the city is quite an experience that I would recommend!!

5) Papillon Enterprise:

Did you know that 70% of Haitians are unemployed? Papillon Enterprise is a business venture that employs Haitians in making jewelry and other brilliant crafts. I'm going to be sharing more about Papillon in the future (as I got a tour of their workshop and got to know some of the staff!), but for now, if you are in PaP, you will not want to miss this incredible experience! You can also get a delicious smoothie from here as well!!

Give-Away!
Secondly, since we are on the subject of Haiti, i'm doing a very fun give-away today! My friend Katharine married a great guy named Ted, who also happens to be a lawyers and one very talented author!

Ted has spent a lot of time in Haiti, and in 2012 published an incredible fiction book called "Because We Are". It was so good that the editor of Amazon read it, and picked it up to be featured on Amazon! I'm giving away 3 copies today!! The book is a murder mystery novel set in Haiti that follows the trail of 10 year old Libete and her friend Jak. I can personally attest that this is a very great book, and will give you loads of insight into the country!!

To Win a Copy:
- Sign up for Ted's mailing list where he gives updates on his new books! You can sign up here.
- For an extra entry, nominate Ted's new book "There is a Land" on Kindle Scout (it literally takes 2 seconds!). And, as an extra bonus, if the book is nominated, you will get a free copy of it! Score!!
- Write a comment on the blog with what you did! That's it!

If you have a heart for Haiti, or are planning to go, you won't want to miss out on any of Ted's books!! For a fun little bonus, you can download two of Ted's short story's for free here.

Happy Thursday Friends!!

Top 4 Things to do in Jacmel, Haiti

Wednesday, July 29

As I mentioned numerous times, Haiti has little in the way of tourist infrastructure. But that doesn't mean there aren't incredible places to visit! Jacmel, only two hours away from Port-au-Prince is a must see! It has everything you could want….a charming historic old town, beautiful beaches, hiking and swimming! Here are the top 5 things to do in Jacmel!

1. Stroll the Old Town

Hundreds of year ago, this was a bustling, successful, colorful waterfront port transporting coffee to the world! Today, it is a sleepy waterfront town selling all sorts of artisan goods...everything from baskets to artwork! If you plan on going, pick up a guidebook of Haiti, and do the walking tour of Jacmel! It will take you to waterfront, the old square and market place, and to hotel Florita. See more pictures and read more about it here.

2. Lay out at the Beach and Swim in the Ocean
Haiti is, after all, an island in the Caribbean!! Therefore, it's bound to have beautiful beaches:) There are a few beaches to visit in the Jacmel area, but the one we loved most was Timouillage Beach. Long stretches of sand, palm trees, beautiful water…and the best part, no people!! Katharine and I spent the whole day there and only a few other souls were anywhere to be found! See more pictures here.

3. Bassin Bleu

If you like hiking and swimming combined, don't miss Bassin Bleu. Basson Bleu is a series of 3 swimming pools cascading down the mountain by way of 3 waterfalls. The top swimming hole and waterfall is the most beautiful, where you can jump off rocks and into the deep blue waters! To read more about it and see our pictures, click here.

4. Eat and Relax at Cyvadier Resort
Cyvadier is the most wonderful gem in all of Jacmel. If you travel to Jacmel, stay here! The grounds are absolutely gorgeous, the food delicious, and the view INCREDIBLE! Cyvadier is located in a sweet little cove overlooking a beach, and is such a refuge after spending all day around town! Even if you don't stay here, make the trip to eat a meal here…yum yum!! Hope this is helpful:) xoxo

Bassin Bleu // Jacmel, Haiti

Monday, July 27

Jacmel, the colorful colonial city only 2 hours from Port-au-Prince, is such an amazing place to visit in Haiti. Not only is old town adorable, but the beaches (especially Timouillage) and natural beauty were a blast to discover as well! Bassin Bleu was no exception!

Bassin Bleu is a series of 3 waterfalls and pools, nestled into the lush mountains up against the ocean wall. We took a scooter taxi up the mountain (which was quite the adventure in itself, ha!) and then hiked up the mountain. The first two swimming holes are pretty, but not so tempting to swim in. The third, considered the most beautiful is quite lovely. There is a waterfall, and plenty of big rocks to jump off of!!

If you plan to visit Bassin Bleu, make sure to get a tour guide for the experience (which you can find in old town, or call from your hotel. We stayed here). Like many things in Haiti, not much is properly marked and we would have been completely lost without the guide! You hike up and down big rocks, and at one point have to do a little bit of rappelling! Another tip is to make the trip early in the morning. We were the first ones to arrive at the pools, and by the time we left a few hours later, there were swarms of people coming in!!

Going to Jacmel anytime soon? Here are a few posts so far…

A little Haiti Goodie Bag for you // Give-Away

Wednesday, June 24

So because I love you guys, I collected some adorable odds and ends from Haiti that I want to give one lucky winner today. Haiti had some beautiful jewelry and it was such a joy to pick out some pieces for you to add to your summer wardrobe! Lately i've been really loving the all-natural jewelry look, like wood and shell. While on Timouillage Beach, I picked up this wooden bracelet as well as the shell bracelet. And…because these adorable kids were selling shells, I nabbed the cutest one to give to you!

My friend Katharine also bought these leather flip flops from her Haitian friend (to support her shoe business), and wanted to throw them into the goodie bag as well. They are size 8 (and even if they don't fit you, give them as a gift!).

All you need to do is just comment anything in the comment section below, and you'll be entered!! The contest ends this Sunday night, June 28th! Love you readers so so much!!

In case you missed any Haiti posts:

Cyvadier Hotel // Jacmel, Haiti

Monday, June 22

Like I mentioned here, Haiti doesn't have much of a tourist industry, which is really too bad because their natural beauty is top notch. Katharine and I spent 3 glorious days in the beachside village of  Jacmel, south of Port-au-Prince, lounging on Timouillage Beach and walking through the enchanting old town Jacmel.

But probably one of my favorite parts of Jacmel was the hotel we stayed at… Hotel Cyvadier Plage.  This place was absolutely epic, and for the price we paid ($50 a night per person) was TOTALLY worth it! It was nestled into a lush little cove, filled with palm trees and flowers and a million dollar view of the ocean. The open air dining room hugged the cliff so each meal revealed the spectacular view, and there were chairs and hammocks all around to enjoy the scenery from. There was also a pool to cool off in when the humidity felt a bit dense.

On evening at dinner there was a tropical storm, and it was absolutely crazy to be seated in such a cozy place watching the waves crash up against the rocks, and the lightening out on the water. So many good memories from our stay!

Cyvadier is a bit of a destination in it's own right, and I felt so blessed to stay there with my best friend for 3 days! The food is some of the best in Jacmel, and many people just came to eat there! My favorite was the lobster as well as the fruit and grilled prawn salad!

If you are in Jacmel, Cyvadier is the place to stay!! Enjoy the pics and Happy Monday!!
