Help Exchange- An incredible resource for finding help around your home

Thursday, April 10

Right after my 4th baby was born, I was struggling. I was simultaneously trying to home educate my older children, while at the same time care for my sweet babies. Added to that was a husband who was gone 12 weeks of the year working long hours on the farm. I reached a point where I knew something had to change for both my sanity, and our family's balance.

I happened to be at the library one day with my kids when I met a new friend. This friend had a hobby farm in the next town over, and she talked about hosting people all over the world through a website called Help Exchange.

She mentioned that anyone could sign up to be a "host" if they needed help around their home. The host would make a listing detailing the kinds of help they needed, and then put it up on the website. The responsibility of the host was to provide a room and meals for the helper.

And simultaneously, people from around the world could sign up as "helpers". Helpers committed to working 4-5 hours a day in whatever capacity you had for them.

You could search the website and reach out to people who you thought would be a good fit for what you needed! It was a mutual agreement!

I immediately went home that day and made a profile (that's how desperate I was haha).

A few weeks later, a gal from Belgium named Audrey contacted us. She was working in Canada, and wanted to come down and stay with us in California. She came for 2 months, and to say it was the most incredible experience was an understatement.

AUDREY WAS AMAZING!!! She literally became an instant part of our family, and brought so much life and love and laughter to our home. She loved our children, baked and cooked delicious meals from Belgium for us, helped in our garden, folded laundry, etc etc etc!! Having her stay with us was a dream come true. She became a soul sister to me, and she became a big sister to our children.

Since then we've hosted another sweet Help Exchange "helper" named Yona from France. She was also an incredible gift to our family, and blessed us tremendously in a very hard season.

I've also passed this info on to friends and family who have also used the platform! My friend Kristen who has 4 children and lives Georgia has used it multiple time with great success.

I know this option is not for everyone, but it has been really lovely situation for us. We like it because there is not money involved (which helps financially), but also, our family gets an incredible cultural experience. We get to introduce someone to American culture, while at the same time learning about their culture.

Most of these exchanges are short term, so it makes it easy to try out!

Would you do this? What question do you have? I hope this was helpful for you:)

Tomorrow I'll be sharing all about having an au pair in our home, stay tuned:)

Seasons of Friendship

Wednesday, July 15

I'm one of those people that just feels most loved when I'm washed in the kindness, excitement, and love of others. This past weekend was incredibly refreshing as I literally went from one life-giving person to the next! I unexpectedly got to meet up with a friend who spent the last year and a half being a midwife all around the world, welcoming babies with love and joy, even in the most sterile environments (her crazy stories from India and Zambia were giving me chills!). My cousin made such an effort to come to visit me this weekend for a few hours, and we spent a very hilarious time playing cards which made me laugh…the kind of laughter that is medicine for the soul. Dinners on Friday and Saturday night consisted of friends who cooked for us, and affirmed us. And then I got to visit my sister-in-law and their new baby. Holding a new baby was just wonder-filled. As the weekend waned, and Sunday night began to end, I curled up in Kevin's arms with the biggest smile on my face. "You're filled to the brim, aren't you?" he asked. I sighed something heavenly, and burrowed my way further into his shoulder…"yes, yes I am".

If only life was like this all the time, right? I think God gives us glimpses of a heavenly love when we have a friend that pours into us with laughter and games and food and a listening ear. But not all seasons are filled with such intense friendship. I can remember back to junior high and early parts of high school where I longed for a deeper connection with my peers, for someone that "got" me. I recall a few times i've moved somewhere new in my "20's" and had to start all over again with friends. It's hard, and can be so discouraging at times. It requires us to put ourselves out there, and expend so much energy in the "small talk". I mean, how many times can you REALLY tell your life story in 3 minutes to 5 different people in the room before you want to pull your hair out! I get it!

But friendship is so important, so necessary for our souls. It is where our God given selves can be exposed for what they truly are, and loved so fully. It is where we can learn to give and receive love, where service and sweet times take root. So therefore, it must be worth our investment. If you're in a season where you feel a void of true friends, i'll be the first to stay you're probably not alone. I've been there, and I can imagine so many other women are in that place right now too! But keep your chin up darling, God's got something special for you. Keep trusting him in this season. It may take weeks, months, or even years, but never back down from understanding the importance of community, and praying from something special! It's worth it:)

Praying for you today friend, wherever you are, that rich and laughter filled community finds you in a special place!! Happy Wednesday!

ps- don't forget to enter the give-away from Monday to win a gorgeous Sari Bari quilt!!

Hello New Friends:)

Friday, March 7

Hi new friends! I'm Katie and I'm so glad you are stopping by to say hello:)

On this blog we are all about adventure, and living an inspired life.
my motto is from Catherine of Siena, who said
"if you are what you should be, you will set the whole world ablaze."
because life has purpose, and meaning, and can be utterly beautiful, even in a broken place!
I'm learning to live as a gift to the world.

my husband and I are from California,
but have traveled to over 40 countries {and have lived in Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and Italy}
I've finally gotten around to writing a travel series on
"How to Pay for Travel" because there are mad money-saving tricks to be had when it comes to adventure!
{you can see parts 1-6 below!}

we also believe very much in living in community, loving others and loving God.
a few years ago we moved into a low income neighborhood, and it changed our life.
we experienced poverty, and gangs, and hardship like we had never seen,
but were overwhelmed with the relationships we made as our neighbors filled our hearts with love and joy.
last year, we lived in Nepal,
and worked at an aftercare home for girls rescued out of trafficking.
it.was.epic.
It was chaos, and colorful, and mostly life changing, as we fell in love with the girls we worked with!

Lastly, i'm all about being real. I live with an autoimmune disease called Lupus, but have found so much healing this past year (see here, and here). While living in Nepal I learned a lot about the power of forgiveness {here}, and saw the Lord replace my anxiety with a heart of peace {here}.
I've put links to a few of my favorite posts below…so grab a cup of coffee and enjoy:) And please please drop me a line and say hello. My favorite thing is to make new friends!! Can't wait to hear from you!
love Katie
