Seasons of Friendship

Wednesday, July 15

I'm one of those people that just feels most loved when I'm washed in the kindness, excitement, and love of others. This past weekend was incredibly refreshing as I literally went from one life-giving person to the next! I unexpectedly got to meet up with a friend who spent the last year and a half being a midwife all around the world, welcoming babies with love and joy, even in the most sterile environments (her crazy stories from India and Zambia were giving me chills!). My cousin made such an effort to come to visit me this weekend for a few hours, and we spent a very hilarious time playing cards which made me laugh…the kind of laughter that is medicine for the soul. Dinners on Friday and Saturday night consisted of friends who cooked for us, and affirmed us. And then I got to visit my sister-in-law and their new baby. Holding a new baby was just wonder-filled. As the weekend waned, and Sunday night began to end, I curled up in Kevin's arms with the biggest smile on my face. "You're filled to the brim, aren't you?" he asked. I sighed something heavenly, and burrowed my way further into his shoulder…"yes, yes I am".

If only life was like this all the time, right? I think God gives us glimpses of a heavenly love when we have a friend that pours into us with laughter and games and food and a listening ear. But not all seasons are filled with such intense friendship. I can remember back to junior high and early parts of high school where I longed for a deeper connection with my peers, for someone that "got" me. I recall a few times i've moved somewhere new in my "20's" and had to start all over again with friends. It's hard, and can be so discouraging at times. It requires us to put ourselves out there, and expend so much energy in the "small talk". I mean, how many times can you REALLY tell your life story in 3 minutes to 5 different people in the room before you want to pull your hair out! I get it!

But friendship is so important, so necessary for our souls. It is where our God given selves can be exposed for what they truly are, and loved so fully. It is where we can learn to give and receive love, where service and sweet times take root. So therefore, it must be worth our investment. If you're in a season where you feel a void of true friends, i'll be the first to stay you're probably not alone. I've been there, and I can imagine so many other women are in that place right now too! But keep your chin up darling, God's got something special for you. Keep trusting him in this season. It may take weeks, months, or even years, but never back down from understanding the importance of community, and praying from something special! It's worth it:)

Praying for you today friend, wherever you are, that rich and laughter filled community finds you in a special place!! Happy Wednesday!

ps- don't forget to enter the give-away from Monday to win a gorgeous Sari Bari quilt!!

A birthday weekend with friends in the Mountains!

Thursday, April 2

It's no secret that I think birthdays ought to be celebrated with gusto {see here and here for proof!}. As a fun bonus this year, two of my best friends treated me to a weekend up in the woods! It was as delightful as it sounds! A very generous family lent us their cabin for free {Thanks Stef & Medy} and we packed our little car full and headed up the hill!

The rule was that everyone had to bring a craft and a game to share! Here's what everyone brought:

Games: I brought Scattegories {my favorite!}, Emmy brought Quirkle {which I was TERRIBLE at, but it was fun!} and Diana brought Ticket to Ride (the European version) which was the biggest hit of the weekend and we all played a few times!

Crafts: Emmy is a master calligrapher {she did the calligraphy on my travel calendar here} and brought us all quills to learn and practice. Diana brought a really fun canvas and string craft like this one here {I made the outline of California!}, and I brought my dress-up bag and did a photo shoot for us all in the woods! It was really sweet how much my sweet friends loved the photo shoot. It's amazing when women speak words of beauty and encouragement over one another! Sometimes us ladies just need to dress up and feel pretty, right? {we never really outgrow playing "Dress-up"do we? haha}

We took walks, played games, lounged in our pajamas, and made yummy food!! For breakfast we made these paleo crepes, I made gluten-free bruschetta, Emmy made this delicious stew, and we topped off the weekend with this amazingly delicious paleo lemon-poppyseed cake. We drove back down the mountain with our tummies full and your hearts overflowing in thankfulness.

Women can just be the most amazing encouragements in life, right? Let's be lights in friendship, affirming, inspiring, and loving our friends for who God made them to be! Thanks E & D for a great weekend:)

being beautifully overwhelmed

Friday, June 14

In the last few days I have been so beautifully overwhelmed. All these blessings keep piling up, one on top of the other, and my heart seems to be spilling over contentment.

i'm certainly not always in a season like this, so for now, i'm soaking it up and thanking Abba.

nepal has been a time of sweet healing, and I'm watching God pour his balm into my heart and give me so many of my hearts desires.

as you know, we currently live in Nepal. this fact alone has showed God's faithfulness in answering our prayer to live and serve abroad before we have kids. We love how free and adventurous we can be, taking off at a moments notice to explore this mysterious place.

we also love that our marriage is a team, as we work together to love and serve the girls in the aftercare home. watching my husband redeem these precious girl's view of men has filled me with adoration I cannot explain.

and many of you know that just recently we found out that God provided us a way to go to Europe for 2 weeks this summer to go to a wedding of our dear exchange student sister Aline. Seriously, He mysteriously lowered the airline points we needed on our credit card to get a free trip. during peak travel season. what.the.heck. Not to mention we will get to travel around with my family through france, belgium and holland.

and lastly, one of my dearest friends and her husband flew half way across the world to spend 3 weeks with us. they are here now, and it's been so so fun to have them here with us, laughing and seeing our "world" as we know it now!!

so i am overwhelmed.
but in the very best way.
have a great weekend friends!
we are off to Chitwan national park to bathe with elephants and do an animal safari! woo hoo!
love Katie

here are a few pictures of our adventures the last few days....
