Selling Our house- how God continues to answer our prayers

Friday, November 6

If you haven't read the story of how we bought a house, you can read that first here:)

While finding and buying our new house has been an incredible experience, it made it more real that we would have to part with our current house. We have poured so much love into this house, or what I like to lovingly refer to as my "cottage".  So many beautiful memories have been made here...we brought our first two children home from the hospital to this house, celebrated countless birthdays, cried and laughed and hosted a million parties and friends from all around the world!

While I have total peace about moving forward, there is still a sadness to leave this sweet place. This home sort of became our baby...we poured so much time and energy, love and creativity into making this our little cottage and I guess I wanted to see it go to the right people.

I began to pray that God would bring the right buyers a long, who would love this house as much as we did. Who would see all the beautiful aspects of it...the gorgeous natural lighting, beautiful hardwood floors, all the aesthetic projects we've done to enhance the vibe (ie: shiplap, beadboard, wainscoting, etc). And lastly who would love our neighbors well and desire community.

The first few days we listed it we had SO many showings. And....getting a home ready to show (ie: CLEAN and TIDY) is absolutely NO JOKE with a toddler and a baby! It's hard enough just to leave the house with little ones, much less vacuum, do dishes, put away junk that kids pull out, etc!!  It almost killed me, but I made it. (Nevermind like 10 minutes before a showing I discovered Everett had grabbed the toilet bowl brush and was walking around the house splashing nasty toilet water on everything!! Gahhhh!!!

Day 2 of showings we heard there was a couple VERY interested who planned to make an offer. On Day 4 of showings, they did. They sent over a letter to us, and you guys...tears began to stream down my face as I read it. Not only did they write that walking into our house was like walking into their "dream home" but they went on to appreciate all that we had done to make it beautiful. They ended the letter by saying they wanted to continue our legacy of loving and welcoming people in.

I DIED! I couldn't believe how perfect they were, how much they loved our home, and how they wanted to be a source of community in our neighborhood! Those were all the things I had prayed specifically for. Wow God, thank you!

Again, just another prayer that God has answered on this journey that shows me we are walking in His will and timing. I have been so impacted by the passages in John that talk specifically about asking for things in Jesus' name, and God saying He will answer. I am not naive enough to think that everything we ask will be answered according to our wishes (because LIFE has shown me that isn't true, haha), but never the less, I've been so encouraged to ASK. To boldly come before his throne and make the ask. If it's in God's will, then He will move in that direction. And if it's not, He will move in another direction. But how the Lord desires us to come to Him. To pour our hearts desires out (big or small).

Be encouraged sweet friend! Ask today:)

Things I'm loving this Fall, and some prayer requests

Thursday, October 27

Hi lovely ladies,

I hope your Autumn is brilliant with all the leaves changing colors before our eyes. Now that i'm back in Northern California, Fall actually feels like Fall, and leaves actually change color. We live right next to a massive park that runs all through our city, with huge oak trees and a creek that winds it's way through town, and i'm always astounded at how much natural beauty there is…especially when the reds and yellows and oranges start bursting forth!

A few things i'm loving…
1) Banana Nut Muffins. Ok…so I try a lot of gluten/dairy free Pinterest recipes. And for every few fails I have, I generally find something I love. These muffins are SO good! I just use the gluten free Trader Joes All Purpose Flour (the one in the pink bag) and they are divine! I also sub almonds for walnuts cause I prefer almonds, but you could do whatever. I also skip the chocolate chips, but by all means add them if you love some gooey chocolate! They are so easy to make and I almost always have all the ingredients on hand. YUM!!

2) Chunky sweaters. This one I have worn about 3x a week, and I can't get enough. I love how cozy sweaters are…like wearing a blanket throughout your day. It's finally getting chilly enough to wear these on the daily…and it is happening over here:)

3) Walks in the crisp air. Last Sunday (before it rained) Kev and I took a walk through the park. Of course, I had on the chunky sweater from above which made me feel cozy as we tromped through the gorgeous Fall colors and held hands, and dreamed about our baby. As a total side note, i've been dying to talk about names our whole marriage, and Kev's always wanted to wait until we get pregnant to do so. Because he asks so little of me in matters like this, I conceded. And now that we are having a baby, all I want to do is chat names haha. On one adventure in the park, we played a game where we went through the entire alphabet and both had to throw out a name for each letter. It was fun!

4) Paleo Chicken Pot Pie- speaking of Pinterest wins, I made this chicken pot pie last night, and it was delicious. Kevin loved it, which is saying a lot as he isn't gluten and dairy free like me. I now tend to only try recipes if people in the comments have written that they made it and it was good. This recipe had like 83 comments with a 99% LOVE rate of people who tried it. So I figured it had to be somewhat delicious, right? And let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. If you have allergies, or just want to be more healthy, then this is such a good recipe! And partially because I honestly had almost all the ingredients on hand and didn't have to pick anything up for it! I used EarthBalance dairy free butter in place of the palm shortening (because I have no idea what that is, haha), and it turned out great! I also added celery and peas and took out the broccoli!

5) Red clothes- I don't know, but the holidays make me want to wear all shades of red! But finding sweet and tasteful red clothing can sometimes be an art. Especially now that i'm pregnant, the last thing I want to do is look like a watermelon!! This shirt above was a perfect blend of sweetness and holiday spirit! I anticipate it being a December staple:) (there's another pic down below where you can see the shirt in more detail!)

6) Tea-Less Chai Latte- Ok, so i'm kind of on a food kick right now, so sorry if i'm overwhelming you with recipes, but this one had to be included!! I don't typically drink caffeine, and now that i'm pregnant I definitely stay away from caffeine, but I LOVE a good chai latte. And a traditional Chai Latte has a base of black tea, and black tea has caffeine. So, I've been on the hunt for a delicious recipe to make myself that tastes on par with a well done tea latte, but doesn't have the caffeine. And this is the one, with a base of cocoa powder, spices, and almond milk! I had a few friends over a last week and whipped this up real quick, and everyone agreed it was so delish (I times the recipe by 5, which was easy to do!)! I dare you to try it! So easy!! (I chose to use raw cocao powder instead of cacao because cacao has caffeine, and I didn't have any on hand!)

7) The Life Giving Home, by Sally and Sarah Clarkson- Sally Clarkson has become one of my favorite authors, and i'm currently savoring her book The Life Giving Home that she wrote with her daughter Sarah. They take turns talking all about family traditions and creating a place of belonging and becoming. It's beautiful, teeming with great ideas, and so warm and welcoming. Every few nights I make some tea, light a candle, and curl up into my chair to enjoy it!

8) A Heavenly Welcome Podcast- So, one of my dear friends Kierra created a Kingdom Childbirth Class that she sells at her website called A Heavenly Welcome. I'm gearing up to take the class, as i've heard such amazing things…but in the meantime, while I cook, I listen to the free podcasts of women who share their story of breaking free from fear and experiencing God in their birth. I have been so encouraged that everyone's birth story is SO different, and there is no one blue print! The one where Nicole shares about her infertility struggle brought me to tears…so so amazing!!

Lastly, i'd love to share a few prayer requests with you. The last few days have been challenging (among other things). But long story short, I was diagnosed with having some pretty severe poison oak. I woke up this morning with my eyes swollen shut, and my entire body covered in the most itchy rash. The doctors wanted to prescribe me some pretty intense steroids, and I'm a very natural person, so this seemed scary to me. However, we have company coming to stay with us for 3 weeks starting Saturday, so i'm wanting to recover fast…with eyes that open and open sores closing up…ya feels me? I'm a pretty sad sight to see right now. So I started the round of steroids today, and while I prayed about the decision to take them, it's scary thinking how they may affect our sweet baby. I'm needing extra trust in the Lord right now, that He will hold our little one in His loving hand, and protect her from any toxins or harm that could occur.

On top of poison oak, the guys are still not done harvesting (My dad, brother, husband, and uncles and cousins all have a family rice farm). Typically they are done the 3rd week of October, but we are getting so much rain (that is not typical) that we keep getting pushed back! They are about 100 acres short of being done (which is nothing) but the rain just keeps coming and coming. This means that Kevin may not be done by the time our company arrives, which is a bummer.

There are other things too that I have not mentioned, but all that to say, I feel a little overwhelmed by it all. I'd love your prayers in this time!! You guys are so wonderful!! xoxo Thank you!!

Going Amish...

Friday, January 6

It's a new year people! The holidays have waned, the ball has dropped, our Christmas tree is almost dead and must go soon (however I'm holding on as long as I can), and somehow the date is now 2012. Can it be?

When it comes to new years resolutions, i'm about as good as the rest of America- meaning my resolutions usually last all of....let's say....one week. Two if I'm lucky. But this year (after one of the craziest and intense of my life), my heart and mind have been nudging me into a new mindset. Instead of making a list of unrelated items associated with compartmentalized portions of my life, I felt like I needed to mentally ask myself where my life was going, and if I wanted it to be going that way. Had I made decisions this past year that blew me off course, and was I willing to take steps to put me back on track?

With all the willpower I could muster, I began praying and asking the Lord to guide my steps for 2012. Over and over again, I heard the Lord speaking the words "simplicity and kingdom" over me. And to be honest, the more i've thought about it, the more i've realized these two truths simply go together.

With some deep introspection, my magnifying glass upon this last year yielded some signs that indeed I was not going in the direction I desired my life to be about. I felt "busy" all the time, I was constantly over analyzing my decisions for the wedding, and heaped enormous expectations on people (including myself). In one way or another, I began to lose sight of the only treasure that really matters, and that is Jesus.

So with this New Years, I prayed about how to allow God to steer me back on the path of his grace and freedom. The quote from William Law that I spoke of last post has helped guide me "If you have not chosen the kingdom of God first, in will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead." I deeply desire God first, and so with that I began to ask the Lord to help shed any obstacle hindering this heartbeat.

Now before I share my hopeful shapings of this year, I have a confession to make. I adore the Amish. If it was possible to have a crush on a "people group" I would have a major crush on the Amish. And here's why. They are courageous in the way they live. Their value on community, simplicity, economy and modesty, wrapped up in a reverent and honest love of the Lord, allow them a joy and freedom scarce found in our society. Yes, it is true that they do not use electricity, cars, cell phones, or God forbid....the internet, and we might ascertain that they are missing out on not only convenience but connection. How horrible it seems for us to imagine life without technology. And yet, I believe it is exactly their sacrifice that allows them to live full and relational lives.

The point is, I believe true life, abundant life, is often found in sacrifice. Cleaning the deepest facets of our life to bring God and others to the forefront. Time to connect, face to face, time to raise a barn together like the Amish and build relationships of healthy interdependence. God created Adam in his perfect image, and then knew that his perfect plan was for Adam to be in community, so created Eve. Community is God's perfect plan from the beginning. For me to be fully present, I had to make some sacrifices that in the short term may be hard, but in the long haul are God's perfect treasures:) I'm sure in the moment the Amish farmer may have wished he had the technology to build his barn in a day, but the blood sweat and tears that sustains him as he labors side by side his friends binds the friendships and the mutual feelings of accomplishment that last a lifetime. I want to invest in the eternal, I want my actions and choices to be those that last a lifetime:)

So, while I haven't donned a bonnet or bought a horse and buggy, I am working on making decisions out of sacrifice that lead me deeper into the heart of God. Here are a few "mind-set shifts" that i'm beginning this year:

- Going part-time: For the past 3 years I've worked full time at Empowering Lives International. I've loved my job, working to make an impact in East Africa. About 6 months ago, I felt a strong desire to go part time, in an effort to create more space to commune with others. I deeply desire to build a home for my husband and I, and to be available for spontaneous outings with friends, family and even God. I long for times of reading, and resting, and opening my heart and soul. Society may tell me that it isn't financially smart to go part-time right now, that I should be working and saving up money. But Jesus said "you cannot serve both God and money" and if my ultimate goal is pleasing him, and I feel He is calling me in that direction, I will follow, and pursue his eternal plans for Kingdom living. Fresh winds, and I'm excited:)

- Going off facebook: This one may seem trivial, but I found that often I spent too much time just mindlessly scrolling through the newsfeed. And when I really thought about it, I realized that I was not "truly" connecting with someone when I looked through their pictures. I want to be intentional about reaching out to people in person, to hear their voice on the phone, or to make a special visit to see them face to face, or send a hand written card letting them know i'm thinking of them. In no way do I condemn social media, but I think it's easy to lose sight of what it really means to have a deep connection with someone, a bonding of heart to heart. So I hope to be more intentional with all of you this year:)

-Reading biographies: Reading can open up worlds, ideas, and inspiration. I believe personal story and testimony is so valuable, and I long to be encouraged by the lives of others. This past year I spent time reading biographies on Hudson Taylor and Corrie Ten Boom, and it changed my life and perception of faith. Their stories moved my soul. My Grandma (who was a missionary for over 30 years in Southeast Asia) are planning to read biographies together this year. We are starting with the biography of Amy Carmichael, and i'm really excited! More on that to come!

-Praying for the world in a year: Kevin and I found this incredible book called "Operation World" that has every country listed in it, complete with prayer requests and information about each country. I printed out a list of all the countries in the world, and cut them up, and put them into a special box I deco-pauged. Every night we take turns picking out a country. Already we are learning SO much about random countries we didn't even know existed, and feel so stoked that we get to pray into being something that might not have happened if we didn't pray. I love that God hears our prayers, and honors them.

-Perspectives Class: Last year, while Kevin was in Indonesia, I had the opportunity to take the Perspectives class. If you've never taken it, or have never heard of it, all I can say is...you are missing out big time. It was the most incredible class ever. It's nation wide and is offered every spring and fall in various locations. It walks through the world christian movement, and is both incredibly moving, interesting and challenging. They fly in qualified dynamic speakers who have experience all over the world. Kevin and I feel called to reach the nations for Christ, whether here or abroad, and we are looking forward to taking it as a couple this spring. If anyone in the OC wants to take it with us, we are starting next week, so let me know:) We are ready to be challenged and grow in new ways in our knowledge of what God is doing worldwide!

-Dinner Dates: Food brings people together, and opens hearts in a very unique way. When we break bread and share a meal together, we are friends and have the ability to speak in to each others lives. I love that. Henri Nouwen (my favorite author) suggests that "Hospitality ...is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place...where strangers can enter and discover themselves as created free; free to sing their own song, speak their own languages, dance their own dances; free also to leave and follow their own vocations. Hospitality is not a subtle invitation to adopt the life style of the host, but the gift of a chance for the guest to find his own". I love this idea, and have found that as a guest of others, I too have been encouraged to be free and live as God created me. Our prayer is that we will be intentional about inviting others over to our home, and that they would feel loved and welcome:)

I suppose I could continue on, but I'm excited about the treasures that this new mind-set shift will bring. I'm looking forward to having more time, to being intentional, and to times of introspection and great learning. And I'm excited to journey with all of you:)

Much much love...

girls group- the prayer, the treasure, the community

Saturday, December 3

{ The girls and I after an intense Dance sesh....}
{ LOVE this girl }

{ My hero Vane }

I love my neighborhood, and as i've mentioned before, I feel like I started really living once I moved here. I mean, i've been alive for 27 years- blood pumping, senses alert. But hearts beat for community, and so in moving I began to live and breathe relationship in a new way.

Last year, I participated in a program called Our Children. For a few months, I became part of a special group of 4 women- two of us from an English speaking church and two from a Spanish speaking church. Coming together every other week, we worked through a bible study called Strangers in the Land, learning what the Bible has to teach us about immigration. Stories were shared, hearts were open, tears were shed, understanding illuminated, and bonds of deep friendship were formed. All of a sudden immigration wasn't this foreign issue spread in the newspaper, dripping with fear and often times animosity. No, immigration became personal, I heard my dear friends share their stories of God's hope and mercy.

I learned that more important than our label as "American", comes our allegiance to the one who paid it all for us- "Christian". And as a Christian, we are called to love our brothers and sisters in Christ. We love others because Christ first loved us. We open our homes because Jesus would have done the same. When we turn away or reject someone because of man-made regulations, we hurt the heart of the Lord. Our citizenship is ultimately in heaven, not in geo-political boundaries.

As a group, the 4 of us would lead workshops for precious girls in an immigration shelter. Young girls who were caught crossing the border. My heart ached for these little women- each with a story that pulled strings I didn't even know I had in me. However lost and confused, these were Abba's special ones. I longed to hug them and play with their hair, but rules denied us such expressions of love. One night, I accidentally bent the rules and hugged a sweet girl from El Salvador. She looked at me and said "I haven't felt loved like this in a long time". I went home that night and bawled like a baby, those rapid uncontrollable stuttering sobs. And in the midst of salty tears, the Lord spoke to me in gentle whispers..."Katie, there are girls in your neighborhood that need love too."

And so "girls-group" began as a prayer. A small seed soaked in faith that God would somehow provide a space to reach out to college aged girls in my neighborhood. Odds were against me...I knew almost no girls that fit that age group, I speak no spanish, and had few connections. But with God,the odds are always good. I made a lame flyer, a dear soul passed it out in the neighborhood, and I showed up on the first Thursday and seriously wondered if even one girl would come.

And seven girls came. I beamed. That was a year ago...and in the past year I have fell in love with these seven faithful chicas that show up week in and week out. They make me laugh, they are beautiful, and I am ALWAYS inspired by the way God challenges me through them. Some of them face incredible odds, but do not allow circumstances to dictate their future.

And so we still meet on Thursdays. We study God's word- we bake- we craft- we laugh (a lot)-we play games- we dance- we sing. And most importantly we breath life into each other. We encourage, and speak truth, and infuse God's deep love. Because ultimately, that is what community is about- calling out the good of God and the good in one another. We are a story of transformation.

So whenever I speak of my "girls group", this is the story that precedes. A story of God's handiwork in drawing us deeper into who he created us to be, by allowing situations to change us and inspire us towards something grander.

And this week, the girls and I had so much fun making Christmas banners. Having Christmas wrapping paper, scissors, glue and glitter in my closet, we someone managed to each make some unique holiday cheer to hang in our homes!! Seriously, they make my heart happy (and so do their banners!)
{Craft TIME!!! }
{We were all cracking up b/c by the end of the night Gabs was covered in glitter head to toe- our little fairy dust girl }
{ Feliz Navidad banner...sooooo cute and festive!! }
{ Small but adorable...loved this HOPE banner! }
{ Peace on Earth Goodwill to Men...I didn't have the patience or the time, so I chopped the phrase and just wrote peace, haha }

{ Tam's adorable snowflake banner...she even left me a few to hang in our house!}
