Top 5 favorite Cotswold villages with Kids

Thursday, July 27

Our family loves the Cotswolds so much we are headed back for a 3rd time this October! But in the meantime, I wanted to round up my top 5 favorite Cotswolds villages with kids.

Now granted, I've never been to every Cotswold village so if you have some better contenders, let me know! I'd love to hear from you! These are just the favorites we've visited that I really enjoyed! Let's begin....

How to travel internationally with kids - Part 1 Mindset

Monday, September 12

Since getting back from a 17 day trip in Europe with 3 kids five years old and younger, the main question I've been getting is HOW DO YOU TRAVEL SO FAR WITH SUCH SMALL KIDS?

I've been thinking about this question a lot, and thought I'd do a little series on how to travel with kids. As I was reflecting on our trip, I realized that a huge part of traveling with kids is mindset, and specifically our expectations.

We are an environment

Saturday, April 25

On Monday morning, Avonlea emphatically exclaimed "mama, today we should go on a walk, eat dinner (what she calls breakfast, ha), and have a party with a cake and tea!"

There are quite a few things I can't make happen for her right now, but I could most definitely make this dream a reality, haha!

So, after our planned walk and breakfast, we got to work making a cake and tea. I used this paleo cake recipe which is the BEST cake I've ever tasted, seriously so so good. Go make it! For the tea (which is "hot chocolate" but not) I actually use almond milk mixed with chocolate protein powder, haha...keeping it healthy and the sugar content low.

Avonlea was quite particular this day...she asked if we could wear our fancy dresses. I let her pick mine out (side-note...she picks this dress out for me every single day to wear, but I never do) and she and I twirled and talked in our "Fancy voice" which is essentially a very bad British accent, haha!

When we went to go set up our spread, it dawned on me how many beautiful tid bits we have here and there that could enhance the aesthetics. I mean, there is nothing wrong with sitting at our kitchen table with normal plates. But I thought about the choice I had to make things "fancy" (as we were already doing) and chose to try to bring a little air of "specialness" into our quiet, ordinary little life.

Friends, finding beauty has been getting us through this quarantine.

Choosing to accept my reality right here, and then looking for the gifts and treasures inside it.

Oh friends, do you know that we are an environment in and of ourselves? Edith Schaffer (one of my favorite authors ever) wrote

"In the power of the Holy Spirit ....we are an environment which is affecting people around us. People who come across us or who walk into our presence, become involved. Whether we choose to be an environment or not, we are. We produce an environment other people have to live in.  The effect on them is something they cannot avoid."

Goodness.
At home,
in my ordinary days,
with my two small children...
what environment am I choosing?

But ohhhhh...how this lifted me up in the most inspiring of ways...

"Enthusiasm and excitement infect other people: expectancy that God can intervene and do something in this moment of history and doing something practical to show that expectancy in prayer, affects the attitudes other people are going to have to their troubles"

Today I choose to be an environment that is EXCITED about what GOD CAN DO in this moment of history.

I want to invite Avonlea into praying for our friends and neighbors.

I want to invite my babies into an environment of creativity and beauty that displays the splendor and loveliness of our God.

Beauty can be brought forth in any form...
worshipping with your children
flowers picked in your garden
twirling in a pretty dress
music played and listened to
prayers uttered together
delicious food
reading a book aloud
laughter

Friends...we get to CHOOSE.
Oh how wonderful...what wonderful news!
We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to choose beauty within the space God has given us.
Even in frugal conditions, with not much to spare financially, God will enable us to bring beauty. As Edith says "sacrifice does not mean ugliness, nor does it mean carelessness"

Ohhh....love that!

So let's accept our reality, and press into an environment that leads other straight into the heart of our glorious King! The most BEAUTIFUL one of all!

We also got some sweet visiting time with our adorable god-daughter Lili. there is nothing better than baby smiles and laughter.

friendship into family

Friday, February 24

Remember the shower we threw for baby Lili here? Well, the sweet pea has arrived and is absolutely beautiful. E called us today to come over and meet her...we were like eager beavers to see her.
E and D were just adorable parents, so excited for us to snuggle and meet her.

They also asked us to be Lili's Godparents. We were beside ourselves, honored. We thank God for our little community- for lives that the Master intertwines with his divine touch. For isn't that the journey? To walk through life together, to hold with tenderness, to encourage with tenacity, to love fiercely? We felt the weight of community today when we said "yes, we commit to being godparents". But it was a good weight. A weight that says "I take you seriously because I love you".

Little by little friendship streams into family.

And family is where we want to be with our neighbors.

Let us all learn to love like family this week.

much love!
Katie

toothy grin and hearty chuckle...counting our thanks

Friday, February 3

Yippeeeee it's the weekend:) Hope yours is beautiful...

This past week I had so many lovely reminders of sweet blessings in my life:) Have you read Ann VosKamp's book called "1000 gifts"? It is a call to Gratitude, of cultivating a thankful spirit that ushers us deeper into the heart of God. Kevin and I talk a lot about sowing seeds of thanksgiving. Just today, he came up to me with a HUGE smile on his face, and thanked me by showering me with kisses for cleaning our room and making our bed. His deep gratitude for such a small act of service rendered me all smiles the rest of the day:) Truly, when we are grateful, we walk with deeper JOY:)

Here are a few things I am grateful for this past week:

1) Our sweetest dearest neighbors surprising us with so much LOVE in the forms of cupcakes, and pens, and taquitos. If I have my choice to live anywhere in the world and have any neighbors in the world, I would choose mine. How can you not fall in love with little KC's face below as he presents me with a gift of a flower pen? Or the cute chicas who surprised me with potato taquitos one day...we had SUCH a feast!

2) Delish gluten and dairy free meals! 6 months ago I found out I am allergic to both gluten and dairy. Um....WHAT DO I EAT NOW (especially when your husband's family owns a bagel cafe!) But honestly, the Lord has been SO good and gracious, and has provided resources beyond belief! Not only have I found some incredibly delicious recipes, but God provided a new friend named Chelsea who has the same allergies. We get together every other week and try out a new recipe~ if you have food allergies, let's talk! I have some sweet recipes and I want your favorites!!

3) Discovering that paradise is only 5 minutes from my house! My college roomie came to visit and we stumbled upon the Arboretum at Cal State Fullerton. It's gorgeous! There are plants from ALL around the world, and it is so lush. In the middle of winter everything was in full bloom (thank you LORD for abundance sunshine!!)....we felt dignified strolling the grounds and trying to pronounce the real names of all the flora!
{my not so dignified two thumbs up pose. classy, right?}

4) Neighbors coming to play at our house! Seriously, we LOVE the sounds of a full house...laughter and curiosity and Spanish and squeals of delight! Our house is always open and always full. We thank God for an abundance of opportunities to live in community!

I hope you are filled with gratitude today:) Much much love....Katie

Living with Hope

Monday, January 16

{with two of God's sweetest gifts}

This weekend, God's deep light shone bright into the crevices of my heart, spilling out smiles and laughter and hope. Beauty came in the form of 40 children at winter camp, where together we ran and jumped and played like little children. Like children are supposed to play. No cell phones. No internet. Just pure fun goodness.

I'll post more about camp later, but today I ran across a beautiful quote by Henri Nouwen on HOPE. I hope you are encouraged today by the truth and loveliness of his words. Let's live in HOPE together today:)

Optimism and hope are radically different attitudes. Optimism is the expectation that things-the weather, human relationships, the economy, the political situation, and so on-will get better. Hope is the trust that God will fulfill God's promises to us in a way that leads us to true freedom. The optimist speaks about concrete changes in the future. The person of hope lives in the moment with the knowledge and trust that all of life is in good hands.

All the great spiritual leaders in history were people of hope. Abraham, Moses, Ruth, Mary, Jesus, Rumi, Gandhi, and Dorothy Day all lived with a promise in their hearts that guided them toward the future without the need to know exactly what it would look like. Let's live with hope.

to be a child again

Sunday, November 6

I love kids. Yes, they are cute and spontaneous and random but most of all they are free. Spending five minutes in the presence of a thriving child is like wiping the dust from our lens of life. Kids ceaselessly remind me of living in fullness, of not conforming to social standards just because they are the social standards, and of pursuing avenues knowing that failure doesn't mean the end, it just means to try a new way to traverse the avenue. Weight and pressure and worries find no corners to occupy in their little minds, which is why curiosity and adventure run rampant.

On Saturday, Kevin and I spent the good part of the day framing wedding pictures to put on our wall. Ankle deep in Ikea frames, Kevin swung open the front door with a huge grin on his face and an impending message in his eyes. He had been out running a few errands, and while walking back to our apartment, had been mobbed by the kiddos in our courtyard.

"They want you down there" Kevin said out of the blue. Gaze shifted from still frames of suited Kevin to a live and active frame of my husband's laughing face. "Huh?" I retorted, surprised the kids were asking for me. Evidently the following transpired....

four year old JT: "Kevin, where's your sister?"
Kev: "My sister? That's my wife!"
JT: "Oh"...long pondering pause...."where's your wife?"
Kev: "She's at the house"
JT: "Why?"
Kev: "She's working on stuff"
JT: "Oh, well can you tell her that she needs to come down here?"
Kev: Very amused "Sure I will"

I giggled at the exchange (sister, wife, gringa- didn't seem to matter who I was, they wanted me to come play). There wasn't really a choice- I was being summoned by a four year old so what could I really do? It was freezing outside (a rarity in southern California), and I put on gloves and bundled up. Kev and I trooped down, and our little friends were huddled on the sidewalk dancing around a new toy car Brian had just received. Their eyes fell on us gringos, and the next thing we knew we were dancing too.

An hour was spent with these five little cowboys, playing and racing in a 30 foot radius where grass meets sidewalk. Relay races were on hand- backwards, forwards, sideways- you name it we relayed it. Tag came along naturally, red faced and wind chapped we were having the time of our lives. The boys demonstrated their ninja kicks, and JT's declaration that "I'm good at everything I do" sent Kevin and I into a fit of laughter. Of course he wasn't the best at tag or ninja kicks, and come to think of it he came in last on the races. But loses don't define greatness, so in our hearts and his, he was great. No arguments there.

Departing the scene an hour later, smiles and contentment were in order. My heart was filled with something beautiful, but whatever it was in that moment, I was relishing not analyzing. However today was filled with more introspection- how could playing tag and racing small ones brim the soul? And then I was reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 18:3 when he said "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

Somehow in the span between childhood and adulthood something begins to choke us, to take a part of our very core, and to deform the freedom inside of us. If the kingdom of God is essentially 'everything that God wants to happen, happens', then I would surmise that God is not a fan of this chokehold. In fact, bondage is not an option for the child of God, for he is committed to setting the captives free.

Kids seem to lack fear, anxiety and depression for the most part. For goodness sake, most kids will leap into a pool even when they don't know how to swim. My niece Sienna has no fear- she can't swim but she jumps anyway. But then I realized, she is fearless because her daddy is waiting with open arms to catch her. And that's the way God wants us I think. He wants us to know him so well, that we can rest and hang up our fears, and laugh and play and jump and ninja kick with the best of them.

I was encouraged to realize that if God wants us to become more like children, then I think he's telling us to laugh more, let go of things quicker, be confident in who we are in HIM (even when we are not the best, much like JT), and to embrace life and others like the cowboys embraced us gringos. To be ok if life changes or I fall down. If i'm a child, then I know my daddy is there, and if I know my daddy is there, there is just no reason to fear at all. At all.

Let's be kids again, ok? I think it will be more fun, and maybe just maybe, we'll begin to approach our Creator with new eyes to see the most creative way we can run this relay race for Him:)

Happy Monday everyone:)

Love Katie
